Kirkwood Earn-a-Bike Program

The Kirkwood Earn-A-Bike Program at Chain Reaction Bike Hub is designed to provide Kirkwood students with the opportunity to earn a bicycle through volunteer work and hands-on learning. Students will contribute their time and talents to the shop while gaining valuable skills in bike maintenance, repair, and community service. The program promotes self-sufficiency, fosters a sense of accomplishment, and encourages sustainable transportation.

How Earn-a-Bike Works

Step 1: Sign Volunteer Waiver

Step 2: Register for Kirkwood EAB

Fill out our Registration Form with name, contact information and volunteer availability.

If you would like to volunteer for retail shifts (customer service), you’ll need to attend a volunteer orientation first. You can immediately get started at a Tuesday volunteer / scrap night!

Step 3: Volunteer Hours

Students complete 12+ total volunteer hours, working on a variety of tasks such as bike salvage, shop organization, and assisting with community events.

To log your hours - sign in at the volunteer counter in the shop (for grant tracking), and also print and fill out the
Earn-A-Bike Records Form.

Caveat: Bikes will be made available on a first-earned basis. As we are a fully volunteer-run shop with all donated/upcycled inventory, this program only works if we have bikes in stock!

Step 4: Earn Your Bike

Once the required volunteer hours are completed, participants can choose a ready-to-be-refurbished bicycle from the shop’s inventory. Participants are encouraged to utilize Volunteer Nights and open shop time to finalize tuning up their bike.

Step 5: Donate Your Bike (Optional)

You’ve enjoyed your sweet ride, but now you’ve graduated and you’re leaving Kirkwood. If you’re not able to bring your bike with you, donate it back to Chain Reaction. We’ll find it another great home.
