Cranksgiving
Join the Cedar Rapids cycling community for Goldfinch Cyclery’s 9th Annual Cranksgiving! Chain Reaction is excited to, once again, be one of this year’s ride stops!
In case you’re not familiar:
Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels with many purposes: part bike ride, part food drive, and part scavenger hunt. It's been held annually in New York City since 1999. Every year, throughout the country, Cranksgiving events help provide thousands of needy families with a wealth of food during the holiday season. For the 9th year running, we're including Cedar Rapids in this national movement!
Pump up your tires, grab your helmet, lights, lock, your navigational skills, and $20-$40* to purchase everything on our grocery list (*depending on how many grocery stops you make).
Registration/check-in starts in the NewBo City Market at 11 am with some caffeinated essentials from our friends, Roasters NewBo. We invite you to support the local flavor and grab some breakfast from one of the many great NewBo Market Shopkeepers.
***Come early for PRE-RIDE YOGA w/ Emily Qual! at 10am***
At check-in you'll sign our waiver in exchange for our 'manifest' with a list of food items to buy from specific grocery stores around town, and time before the official start to strategize your route. At noon we'll roll out and it's up to you to navigate yourself to each grocery store 'checkpoint' to purchase the specific food items on our list. Once you've acquired everything on the list you must deliver the goods to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and make it back down to the NewBo neighborhood for our After Party at the Olympic Southside Theatre from 4-7pm.
***NEW THIS YEAR! :: Bring your own shirt, cloth, kerchief, or other printable material (at least 12"x12") with you the morning of registration, and we'll print the official Cranksgiving CR logo to commemorate the day and memorialize an awesome day spent uplifting the community.
Every receipt you collect from the grocery stops on our manifest earns you a raffle ticket to enter for a chance to take home some RAD prizes from our favorite neighborhood businesses and bike industry friends! *RAFFLE called at 5:30pm**gotta be present!* Beverages available from our friends at Olypmic, Tibbs is making us popcorn, and the good folks from Aromas Pizza and Pupusa will be setup out front all night. YUM!
The Loaves & Fishes is a food pantry is a community resource in partnership with Westminster Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church. Their guiding principles are to treat everyone with respect and offer as much choice and dignity as possible. Every Tuesday from 2:30 to 5 pm, between 100-200 people come to the pantry for a box of food organized and distributed by volunteers. In turn, that food reaches about 1,500 individuals each month.
Visit the Loaves & Fishes website (https://www.crwpc.org/loaves-and-fishes) for more information about Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry and how you can continue to contribute to this invaluable resource.
