FTWN Event: Bike Spring Thaw & Group Ride
FTWN (femme/trans/women/nonbinary) Event. Spring has sprung forward (at least in time zones and calendars), so thaw out your bike from its winter hiding spot!
Bring your bike in, we’ll dust them off together, air up the tires, do any quick adjustments, and then we’ll head on a community-paced, no-drop 5-ish mile trail ride together, starting and ending at the hub.
Want to ride but missing a bike or helmet? Let us know and we likely have one you can borrow.
Bring some snacks to share as you like. Dress for the weather. We will call an audible if it’s too cold or gnarly out, but still save the date for an FTWN evening in the shop.
This evening is FREE to the community.
Any questions, please reach out to us at CRBH.Volunteer@gmail.com
Sorry fellas, this event is limited to femme/trans/women/nb volunteers and participants.

Volunteer Workshop: Hands-Off Wrenching (Public Bench)
Calling all volunteers! One of Chain Reaction’s big 2026 goals is growing our ‘public bench’ space, where anyone can come work on their bike with the guidance of a volunteer mechanic. Instead of fixing someone’s bike with our own hands, we fix with verbal instruction.
Following in the footsteps of several other community bike shops, and like our favorite Iowa City Bike Library (ICBL), we’ll be launching “Hands Off Wrenching.” This is a big skill to learn - not just fixing, but teaching with an empathetic, hands off approach.
Drew Boss, ICBL’s lead mechanic, will join us for this workshop to talk about the basics of hands-off mechanics, some of ICBL’s lessons learned, and help our volunteers get a first hand view of how to volunteer at our upcoming public bench launch.
🛠️ What we’ll cover:
✅ Overview of hands-off wrenching
✅ Tips and techniques to teach verbally
✅ Lessons learned from ICBL
✅ Q&A
This is open to current volunteers. You do not have to be a bike expert to volunteer - just interested in helping folks and have attended a previous orientation. Thanks for your interest in growing CRBH’s community impact!

✅ Recommended tools and gear to carry
✅ Route planning guidance
✅ Connect with other bike commuters
✅ Q&A
Bring your questions - or experience to share with others!

FTWN Adventure Clothing Swap!
Calling all outdoor FTWN (femme/trans/women/nonbinary) enthusiasts! Chain Reaction is hosting an inaugural FTWN Adventure Clothing Swap cohosted by Fearless Women of Dirt Cedar Rapids! Let’s be sustainable and give items a new life.
We’ll be swapping adventure clothing. Think things that to be active in - workout clothes, cycling or running clothes and shoes, outer wear, those hiking pants that don’t quite fit right, etc.
This is for ‘adventure clothing.’ Yes to work out tops, no to stilettos.
1:1 swap - no money will be exchanged! Example: If you bring 5 items, you’re welcome to take home up to 5 items. We’ll be handing out ‘tickets’ that you exchange for items.
Please bring items in good condition that have lots of life left that someone would be stoked to take home.
Items not claimed will be donated locally. General items will go to Waypoint Women’s Shelter, bike items to Chain Reaction.
This is NOT a bike swap or paid swap. CRBH will host a second annual bike swap in late March (!).
Bring some snacks to share as you like.
This evening is FREE and open to FTWN members of the community.
Any questions, please reach out to us at CRBH.Volunteer@gmail.com

Thankful for all our volunteer crew and community. We’re taking some time off for the holidays to spend time with family. We’ll close after volunteer night on 12/23, and be back open with our regular schedule starting off the new year on Saturday 1/3/26 at 10am!
Volunteer Night
Volunteer Nights are a chance to roll up your sleeves, learn something new, and be part of the magic that keeps bikes moving in our community. Whether you’re brand new to bike repair or a seasoned wrench, there’s a place for you here.
Possible volunteer activities include:
Refurbishing donated bikes for community programs
Fixing flats and replacing tubes
Scrapping bikes to be recycled
Cleaning bikes
Sorting, organizing, and tagging donated parts
Prepping bikes for kids’ bike drives and free bike programs
Assisting with special shop projects as needed
You’ll be guided by experienced volunteers and staff, so no prior bike knowledge is required.
Come for an hour or stay for the evening! Every bit of help makes a difference. Volunteer Nights are equal parts hands-on learning, teamwork, and good conversation, all in support of making bikes more accessible and sustainable in Cedar Rapids.
We can’t wait to work alongside you! 💛🚲
New Volunteer Orientation
Interested in volunteering? Want to learn more and take a tour of the shop? Join our New Volunteer Orientation. We’ll be covering all the ins and outs of volunteering at the shop, including the signup and scheduling process, shop roles, activities, workflow, and our community.

Volunteer Night
Looking for a fun and meaningful way to give back to the community? Join us for volunteer night!
Whether you're a seasoned bike mechanic or just someone who loves bikes and wants to help out, we welcome you to come and lend a hand.
Generally, on volunteer nights we have a few projects volunteers can work on:
Take apart bikes and salvage some components for reuse
Assess, clean, and fix up bikes
Organize the shop and help with cleaning tasks
Help plan and prepare for upcoming events, like the Bike Swap on March 29th or our Volunteer Appreciation Party in May!
Special opportunities like delivering bikes to our partners or helping community outreach
Learn about bikes and Chain Reaction while enjoying good company
No experience or RSVP is necessary!
FTWN Bike Craft Night
FTWN (femme/trans/women/nonbinary) Bike Craft Night! It's cold outside, let's get crafty.
CRBH has some no longer usable bike parts that may be your next art project! Chain tree stars? Cassette wind chime? Inner tube earrings? Maybe you want to just hang out with other FTWN folks and talk bikes. Or maybe you have a knitting project that's not quite finished (!). Also, if you don't have space for it, CRBH would love some secular decorations for the season!
Bring some snacks and art supplies to share as you like and your creativity. We'll provide the bike parts (that will likely need disassembled or degreased). Dress warm and like you might get a little messy!
This event is FREE to the community.
*** You also are welcome to bring your own bike and use shop tools, or just come hang out with other FTWN folks in good company! ***
Any questions, please reach out to us at CRBH.Volunteer@gmail.com
Sorry fellas, this event is limited to femme/trans/women/nb volunteers and participants.
