Community Celebration & Open House
Community Celebration and Open House!
We’re turning TWO, and you’re invited!
Two years ago, Chain Reaction Bike Hub opened its doors with a big idea: bikes CAN make a better community and should be accessible to all! Since then, this community has shown up in a BIG way—turning wrenches, donating bikes, sharing knowledge, and building something pretty special together.
We’ve seen neighbors helping neighbors, first bikes, and new skills. Thousands of volunteer hours have been logged, and a whole lot of people have been showing up to care for this community.
Now it’s time to celebrate!

In the Community: EcoFest!
Our volunteers will be out at EcoFest 2026, sharing Chain Reaction opportunities with the community. Come say hi!
Volunteer Workshop: Hands-Off Wrenching (Public Bench)
Calling all volunteers! One of Chain Reaction’s big 2026 goals is growing our ‘public bench’ space, where anyone can come work on their bike with the guidance of a volunteer mechanic. Instead of fixing someone’s bike with our own hands, we fix with verbal instruction.
Following in the footsteps of several other community bike shops, and like our favorite Iowa City Bike Library (ICBL), we’ll be launching “Hands Off Wrenching.” This is a big skill to learn - not just fixing, but teaching with an empathetic, hands off approach.
Drew Boss, ICBL’s lead mechanic, will join us for this workshop to talk about the basics of hands-off mechanics, some of ICBL’s lessons learned, and help our volunteers get a first hand view of how to volunteer at our upcoming public bench launch.
🛠️ What we’ll cover:
✅ Overview of hands-off wrenching
✅ Tips and techniques to teach verbally
✅ Lessons learned from ICBL
✅ Q&A
This is open to current volunteers. You do not have to be a bike expert to volunteer - just interested in helping folks and have attended a previous orientation. Thanks for your interest in growing CRBH’s community impact!

Perfect for both beginners and seasoned riders, this session will help you ride with confidence and control.
No experience needed. Bring your curiosity (and your bike if you’d like)!
This class is FREE to the community. If you would like to make a donation to Chain Reaction for attending the class, we’d suggest a $10 donation.
Volunteer Night
Looking for a fun and meaningful way to give back to the community? Join us for volunteer night!
Whether you're a seasoned bike mechanic or just someone who loves bikes and wants to help out, we welcome you to come and lend a hand.
Generally, on volunteer nights we have a few projects volunteers can work on:
Take apart bikes and salvage some components for reuse
Assess, clean, and fix up bikes
Organize the shop and help with cleaning tasks
Help plan and prepare for upcoming events
Special opportunities like delivering bikes to our partners or helping community outreach
Learn about bikes and Chain Reaction while enjoying good company
No experience or RSVP is necessary!
New Volunteer Orientation
Interested in volunteering? Want to learn more and take a tour of the shop? Join our New Volunteer Orientation. We’ll be covering all the ins and outs of volunteering at the shop, including the signup and scheduling process, shop roles, activities, workflow, and our community.
If you’d like to become a volunteer at Chain Reaction, check out the volunteer link in our bio and RSVP by emailing us at crbh.volunteer@gmail.com .

FTWN Adventure Clothing Swap!
Calling all outdoor FTWN (femme/trans/women/nonbinary) enthusiasts! Chain Reaction is hosting an inaugural FTWN Adventure Clothing Swap cohosted by Fearless Women of Dirt Cedar Rapids! Let’s be sustainable and give items a new life.
We’ll be swapping adventure clothing. Think things that to be active in - workout clothes, cycling or running clothes and shoes, outer wear, those hiking pants that don’t quite fit right, etc.
This is for ‘adventure clothing.’ Yes to work out tops, no to stilettos.
1:1 swap - no money will be exchanged! Example: If you bring 5 items, you’re welcome to take home up to 5 items. We’ll be handing out ‘tickets’ that you exchange for items.
Please bring items in good condition that have lots of life left that someone would be stoked to take home.
Items not claimed will be donated locally. General items will go to Waypoint Women’s Shelter, bike items to Chain Reaction.
This is NOT a bike swap or paid swap. CRBH will host a second annual bike swap in late March (!).
Bring some snacks to share as you like.
This evening is FREE and open to FTWN members of the community.
Any questions, please reach out to us at CRBH.Volunteer@gmail.com
Sorry fellas, this event is limited to femme/trans/women/nb volunteers and participants.
